What is Kinesiology?

Kinesiology is a form of natural, or complementary therapy that started from Chiropractic in the sixties.

Kinesiology literally means “the study of movement”. George Goodheart, a Chiropractor, is recognised as the founder of contemporary Kinesiology. He began to observe and explore muscle monitoring techniques in the 1960’s.

Goodheart discovered that each major muscle had a corresponding organ relationship. This theory was soon expanded to include acupressure and the meridian system. Applied Kinesiology continues to be used by Chiropractors and other health professionals.

How it works

Kinesiologists use muscle monitoring techniques to identify and diffuse stress in the body on many level. As the Australian Kinesiology Association explains, “an unlocking muscle test indicates a disturbed energy flow – be it structural, chemical, nutritional, mental, emotional and spiritual.”

The human nervous system is designed to adapt to change and self-regulate. When we cannot adapt efficiently, the muscles will reflect the stress in the central nervous system. This stress creates specific muscle patterns that kinesiologists can assess using ‘muscle monitoring’ techniques.

The easiest way to understand this is to think of the signals between the brain and the body as feedback loops. As the brain adapts to the changes in the muscle systems, the muscles – in turn – send signals to alert the brain that the changes have taken place.

Kinesiology can be used to address issues and also to align you to your goals and help you achieve your potential.

What kinds of techniques do Kinesiologists use?

The aim of a Kinesiology session is to help restore balance to the body. We use muscle testing to determine where you’re currently out of balance and often discuss some of the causes of these imbalances. We then use feedback from your body (again through muscle testing) to determine what techniques will help to bring your body back into balance. When you’re in a balanced state it is far easier to access your own wisdom so you can make decisions from a place of clarity.

Kinesiologists use muscle testing to determine what techniques will be used in your session but the tools and techniques that I use include:

Bush, Bach and Desert Flower Essences
Essential oils
Crystals
Chakra Balancing
Gland and hormone Balancing
Tuning Forks (sound – there are 14 tuning forks each with an organ/meridian relationship)
Acupressure points (these are held, no needles are used)
Neuro-Lymphatic or Neuro-Vascular reflex points may be held
Time tracking to find the source of the stress
Affirmations
Visualisations
Use of books and oracle cards
Reiki

A fundamental premise of Kinesiology is that the body has innate healing potential and does its best to maintain balance, but sometimes it needs help to achieve that state. Always, the answer is inside you. Kinesiology is a communication tool that helps you access this wisdom.

Kinesiology can be a helpful way of addressing a range of problems or issues, including depressionanxiety,  digestion,  griefworrying about what others think, relationship problems, stress, fear, overwhelm, being “too sensitive”, helping you take responsibility for your life, or for when you’re taking too much responsibility for other people. Read more about what you can work on in a Kinesiology session here.
