Are you grounded?

What does it mean to be grounded?

Let’s start with signs of not being grounded:

  • Your thoughts might jump around
  • Lots of thinking and worrying
  • Feeling unsettled
  • Can’t relax
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Talking quickly
  • Can’t focus on details – losing things, running late, forgetting things
  • Jumping from one thing to another
  • Feeling anxious

Being grounded is strongly associated with the base chakra. It is related to having two feet on the ground, feeling solid, stable and safe and being able to live in the present moment.

You might start by acknowledging to yourself that you’re not feeling grounded, especially if your thoughts are racing around. Just saying to yourself: “ok, I’m not feeling grounded, I might just step aside from these thoughts for a moment” can help to start to break the cycle.

Focus on your physical body. How are you sitting/standing? Is your physical body comfortable? Try relaxing your shoulders. Sit or stand with your two feet flat on the floor.

If you’re tuned into your energy, you might notice that you can’t actually feel much energy at your feet. That might sound strange! Check in and notice what you feel.

Try taking some deep breaths, focusing on a full in breath and out breath and consciously sending energy down to your feet. As the thoughts come back just continue to send energy down to your feet and focus on your breathing. Check back in – does the energy at your feet feel any different?

If you can, step away from your computer or phone or whatever for a few minutes – even if it’s just going to get a glass of water. Try to focus on a one task for a few minutes rather than doing several things at once.

If you can take even ten minutes break from what you’re doing, exercise is probably the best thing, especially taking a walk outside in the fresh air whilst taking deep breaths.

Otherwise, sun salutes can be helpful too – though maybe not in the middle of the office ;)

What about you, any tips for getting grounded?

Again, maybe not for while you’re at work, but gardening is said to be very useful for grounding. I certainly find that to be true myself. Getting your hands in the earth, nourishing and watering plants etc – all very good for chilling out.

If you are at work though, sitting underneath a tree or in a pretty garden and just practicing slow breathing would probably do the trick as well!

Ohh I love the idea of gardening! You’re so right about the grounding aspect. Alas we live in an apartment so no garden for me. However sitting in a park under a tree sounds like a fab alternative. Thanks, I think I’ll make sure I do that tomorrow – such lovely parks in the city, think I’ll duck off in my lunch break :)

A lot of people can’t stand sitting with their feet on the floor. Is this related? A friend mentioned it was a protective thing, not being comfortable in an open position and not being grounded.

Hi Leah, thanks for commenting! I haven’t heard that before, isn’t that interesting. I’m sure you’re right though. If you’re not feeling grounded/comfortable, then having two feet on the floor while sitting (rather than crossed legs, I presume?) may be something you’d subconsciously try to avoid. Sometimes when clients haven’t been feeling particularly grounded they comment how “heavy” they feel after their session – more solid and present in their body. Thanks again for adding your thoughts :)
