Taking responsibility is something that comes up for many clients in their sessions and as most regular clients will recall, “I take responsibility for my attitudes” is the first part of each of the affirmations related to the flower essences.
What does taking responsibility mean to you?
For some people, taking responsibility has immediate, negative connotations.
With one client, the need to take responsibility was coming through in her Kinesiology session in so many different ways we couldn’t exactly ignore it, however the idea held no appeal for her at all.
We began to unpack what her current associations were. We realised, that for her, taking responsibility meant
- very masculine
- boring
- routine
- dominating
- authoritarian
- rules
- things I have to do
No wonder she felt resistance to the idea!
Since her body most definitely did want her to start taking more responsibility for her life, we decided to align the idea of taking responsibility with associations that, for her, were positive.
Things like:
- choosing what I want
- feeling free and light
- being “girly”
- having fun
- enjoying life
We balanced her to these assocations. Unsurprisingly, her stress around taking responsibility for her life diminished hugely and became something she actually wanted to do.
What might not taking responsibility look like?
- hoping you might get offered another job or flat or whatever it is rather than actively seeking change
- expecting others to guess what you want or how you feel
- waiting to “see what happens” in life rather than making choices
- going along with the decisions other people make rather than suggesting things yourself
- hoping you’ll figure out what your purpose or direction is but not spending any time on it
- wishing others would treat you better but not treating yourself very kindly
But it’s scary!
Occasionally people have said they find the idea of taking responsibility scary – they will then actually be responsible for the outcomes in their life, rather than being able to blame circumstances or other people!
This is a really honest response and sometimes it’s good to just acknowledge exactly where you’re at.
However it’s one of those things … once you’ve become aware of the need to take more responsibility in your life … it probably won’t go away until you do something about it!
And the likelihood that you’ll start to achieve the things you want in your life when you take responsibility for it?
So. Much. Higher!
And that’s pretty exciting.
